Police Commission

The Village Board of Police Commissioners has the power to hire, discharge and discipline employees as provided in Wis. Stats. 62.13(5) and 62.13(6m). In addition, the Board of Police Commissioners is responsible for policy and procedures pertaining to promotions and discipline.

  • The Commission shall appoint a Chief of the Police Department, who shall hold office during good behavior, subject to suspension or removal by the Commission for cause. The Chief shall appoint subordinates subject to the approval of the Commission in compliance with Section 62.13(4), Wis. Stats.
  • The Commission shall have such powers as provided in Section 62.13, Wis. Stats., with the exception of the optional powers provided in Section 62.13(6), Wis. Stats.
  • Adopt policies for the conduct of Commission business within its scope of authority.
  • Adopt rules of procedure and selection criteria for Police Officers, including their qualifications, providing those qualifications do not conflict with and meet or exceed those qualifications established by state statute or administrative rule.
  • Adopt rules of procedure and selection criteria for promotion within the department including qualifications, provided those qualifications do not conflict with and meet or exceed those qualifications that may be established in state statute or administrative rule.
  • Review and act on disciplinary charges concerning the conduct of and discipline imposed on Police Officers involving suspensions, reductions in rank, and removals, as permitted by law.
  • Authorize reductions in salaries of subordinates and the Chief of the Police Department in the event the Village Board directs the reduction in salaries of personnel.
  • Exercise other and all powers conferred upon the Commission by the Wisconsin Statutes or the Village Ordinances.

Composition

The Commissioners shall be appointed for five-year terms except for those first appointed, one shall be for a one-year term, one shall be for a two-year term, one shall be for a three-year term, one shall be for a four-year term, one shall be for a five-year term.
